We make small batches at a time, and got tired of dealing with the mess and waste of the filtering process. Our syrup settles naturally while preserved in the jar (usually half gallon jars are used). When the syrup is crystal clear we drain off and heat to 185* f and do a final canning. Then we're ready to give away our syrup!
