Thursday 28th November would see Steam Dreams run its annual 'York Christmas Market' tour from London Kings Cross to York along the East Coast Main Line. This years tour would run direct to Peterborough, before branching off and running via Lincoln and Gainsborough, re-joining the main line at Doncaster and running to York. The return would start diesel hauled, running to Milford before reversing for steam to taking the line to Hambledon to re-join the East Coast main line and run as the outward leg. The tour was booked to be hauled by 70000 'Britannia' but was changed to 34046 'Braunton' a couple of days before.
As usual with the timings of ECML tours on the southern section there is only one shot available without going north of Peterborough, so we start at Welwyn North for the short sprint along the twin track section over Digswell Viaduct, through the station and the two tunnels. Two cameras set up at the northern end of the down platform see 'Braunton' power through the station just before a London bound Azuma heads through, the cold and frosty morning making for a lovely exhaust.
For the return its Knebworth, and two cameras see 'Braunton' pass through at speed, having just been given the route onto the twin track section just behind an on-time Lincoln to London Azuma and ahead of a 20 minute late Aberdeen to London Azuma.
