An unavoidably beautiful dirge, this original by Montreal trumpeter Kevin Dean is well served by Dean and his uncle, noted New York trumpeter Allan Dean. The younger Dean is heard here on a rare Olds Super Recording model trumpet made in 1947. The instrument was offered to Dean for this session, and he was able to quickly and deftly flesh out a breathtaking tone from the instrument. Dean's solo is devastating.

The two trumpeters are accompanied by the talented Marie-Fatima Rudolf on piano, and the trio takes full advantage of the fine acoustics in the Mount Royal United Church. The slow, hypnotic funeral march casts a long and anguished shadow, and ties us inexorably to the unfolding procession, until the end...

The session marks the first time the pair have recorded together, and their longstanding musical camaraderie shows here.

Kevin Dean is a professor, and founding faculty member of the Jazz program at McGill University's Schulich School of Music (http://www.mcgill.ca/music/), and is widely regarded as one of the finest hard bop trumpeters working today.

Preeminent American trumpeter Allan Dean is a professor of music at the Yale School of Music. Dean is lauded for his small brass ensemble work, maintaining longstanding roles in the Summit Brass ensemble, St. Louis Brass Quintet, and Calliope (Renaissance band).
