smooth, red patches on your tongue that seem to shift over time—almost like a map?
That’s a condition called geographic tongue.
Despite how strange it looks, it’s completely harmless.
Geographic tongue happens when parts of the tongue lose their tiny bumps, called papillae.
The result? Smooth, red patches with raised, white borders that change shape and location.
No one knows exactly what causes it, but it’s been linked to stress, hormonal changes, allergies, and even certain foods.
It’s not contagious, and it doesn’t usually need treatment.
Some people may feel mild discomfort—especially when eating spicy or acidic foods—but for most, it’s painless.
Doctors can usually diagnose it just by looking.
If symptoms are annoying, over-the-counter pain relievers or mouth rinses can help.
