The Forgotten Royal Palace Where the Duke of York Built a Mysterious Temple

Before the Victorian castle rose, this estate was briefly owned by Prince Frederick, Duke of York—the "Grand Old Duke of York" of nursery rhyme fame. Local legend claims the famous rhyme originated here, inspired by workers marching up and down a massive artificial hill to build the mysterious Temple of Victory, a classical folly that still dominates the landscape today.

During World War II, it served as the secret headquarters for RAF Bomber Command's No. 6 Group RCAF, where Canadian officers planned bombing raids over Nazi Germany. After the war, like so many great English houses, Allerton faced an uncertain future—the family sold its contents in 1965 and eventually ceased to live there permanently.

Then, in January 2005, disaster struck. A devastating fire tore through the north wing, destroying the main dining room, library, and multiple bedrooms. Many believed this would be the end. But Dr. Gerald Rolph, an American businessman who had purchased and restored the castle in 1983, refused to let it die. The subsequent restoration, completed by specialist contractors, brought Allerton back from the ashes—literally completing architectural visions that had waited over 140 years to be realized.
