History and Present of Katowicka Street, Saska Kępa, Warsaw

1. Beginnings (1920s)
Katowicka Street was laid out in the 1920s, after Saska Kępa was drained and prepared for housing. In 1926 it received its name, commemorating Katowice. The first enclave, Kolonia Łaskiego, was founded the same year. Soon modernist villas and houses appeared, some designed by architects from the Praesens group.

2. Interwar and WWII (1926–1945)
In the interwar years Katowicka became known for elegant modernist villas. During WWII Saska Kępa avoided major destruction, though some houses were damaged or altered.

3. Postwar period (1945–1940s)
After the war many villas were turned into apartments. A section of the street became a model project of the Reconstruction Office, with greenery, benches, sculptures and the bas-relief Plon by Jerzy Jarnuszkiewicz. Some details, like staircases and plates, survive today.

4. Later decades (1950s–2000s)
Katowicka remained mainly residential, with modest changes. By 1979 the urban layout of Saska Kępa was placed under protection, and several houses were listed as monuments.

5. Revitalization (2000s–2010s)
Community initiatives restored historic details. Plon was renovated in 2011, and its square revitalized with benches and greenery. In 2016 the project won the Lachert and Szanajca Award.

6. Today
Katowicka is a quiet, one-way street with interwar villas and houses. It runs from Zwycięzców to Walecznych, near Obrońców. The School Complex No. 77 stands at its corner, decorated with a Warsaw mermaid relief.

7. Recognition and Location
Katowicka lies in Praga Południe, in the heart of Saska Kępa. Its name honors Katowice, fitting the theme of streets named after cities and regions. Many villas are protected monuments, making it one of the most charming streets of Warsaw.
