Screaming and kicking it's way into the world, Marshall Star's debut album, "The Starry Messenger" can be considered the very definition of anti-folk to which you can easily add the superlative the very best of.
Consisting of Clive Parker, of too many bands to mention, but most notably, Big Country and The Members and singer, author, actress Kasie Sharp, this is a warts and all recording where what went into the microphone is what you get to hear, no overdubs, no corrections, raw and passionate.
This is music that's often hard and in your face and at times, doesn't make for easy listening, depending on my mood, I could take the album in its entirety, absorbing the often bleak and visceral themes perforated with feelings that you are able to fix your dreams and the crap bits of life that surround you, but occasionally I needed to take it in more bite sized chunks, it works well either way.
The sign off track, "Christmas" is a really good example of what the album Is about. Definitely not just for the season that it's named after, it's a fantastic metaphor for holding out that future event as something that can keep you going, but only you can describe if it was worth the effort when you get there, yes it's a bit bleak, but it can also be that soul affirming stuff.
The ambiguity of life can find it's way into the titles, before being opened up in the songs and whilst favourites seem to change of different playings, "(With) Friends Like These" seems to find itself near the top of the list, never quite resolving the tension, but nodding towards the more positive.
This is a great album from two musicians who bring not only experience to the cut, but a strong sense of freedom of expression and whilst this is more pottery than fine art, it's a masterclass in unspoken truth and a masterpiece all around.
