Education Secretary Linda McMahon is doubling down on her argument that the U.S. Department of Education is unnecessary. Pointing to the recent government shutdown, McMahon says the agency furloughed 90 percent of its staff — and schools kept running.
This week, the White House began taking steps to dismantle the department, shifting programs and responsibilities to four other federal agencies.
Erika Sanzi, Senior Director of Communications for Defending Education spoke with The National News Desk on what this means for schools and families.
We've been on a downward trajectory since the 70s basically," Sanzi said. "We've pumped in many trillions of dollars only to see outcomes decline.
I think the woke ideologies slash taking our eyes off the ball of the basics has exacerbated this, no question, because in addition to not prioritizing reading, math and the fundamentals... That ideology also forces schools to lower expectations for students.
Sanzi said she believes that the issues with the department predates "wokeness" because the department has not produced outcomes to help both teachers and students.
