Welcome everybody to the beginning!
The first building block of our Westie body language.
This skill is a mechanic of TIMING and is one of the most important skills to develop in our dance. In fact, the entire West Coast swing language is built in increments of 2, so this one is really important to practice!
That’s why we are starting with it 😉😉nudge nudge
A couple of facts to keep in mind about Double Steps
A Double Step means you, as the dancer, takes two steps (weight shifts) over the course of two beats of Music
A Double Step is the baseline rhythm for this form of swing dancing
A Double Step is commonly referred to as a “walk walk” or the “1 2” at the beginning of a preconstructed pattern
A Double Step is the “noun” of our language, or the subjective normal we revert to between new actions “verbs” being introduced
A Double Step is easily felt/practiced as a march in place to the beat
A Double Step happens on the whole numbers of the music (ya know, 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8, the same place you would naturally nod your head or tap your legs and feet)
Although it does get more complicated this is a great place to start! I’m excited for you to be a part of this journey. Practice hard, have fun, and stay on time!
