All the LeanActivity Games are about gamification. Gamification helps you to increase productivity and eliminate waste in a fully playful way. This is not just very important in order to understand the principles behind lean, but also to motivate the entire team to tackle these items.

The game illustrate the importance of such a simple lean tool of 5S. 5S is not just about maintaining discipline but also about setting up a proper work station.

The game consists of five game rounds. In each game round, you have to search for tools inside your drawers. Let’s check which tools the operator needs at the work station.

The list of the required tools are on the top right corner of the game sheet. In each game round, you have 30 seconds time to find and mark all the required tools inside the drawers. Please do not look at the next game rounds before you start and go page by page through the game instead.

It also helps to cover the drawer with a blank paper at the beginning. You can also use your mobile phone as your stop watch. Once the 30 seconds of game time start, remove the paper from the drawers and mark the required tools with a pen.

In the first game rounds, it is pretty difficult to mark all the required tools. After the 30 seconds passed, count the marked tools and write down the game score onto the page.

Proceed the same way with the next game rounds. By going through the five rounds, the 5S principles are applied, making it much easier each time to spot and mark the tools.

When comparing the score of the first game round with the score of the very last round, it becomes very clear how much some basic lean principles help to improve productivity and to eliminate any waste.

This example can be applied to so many work stations. Use the game with some operators to explain the importance of 5S.

Of course 5S is more than just some tools and drawers, but it helps to open someone’s mind by using the game.
