February, 2021. I’ve had my singers perform this piece, in one version or another, every year for the past nine years during Black History Month. This arrangement is quite straightforward, with just a few little embellishments. I think it maintains the character of the piece, which was important to me.
Behold the stunning solo provided by 6th-grader Mia Saez! She has fabulous technique and expression, and after we discussed the lyrics and the history of the song, she turned in a solo that beautifully balances her own personality and pop proclivities with an earnest regard for the melody and text. I’ll mention that a few other students turned in excellent solos as well, and I’m looking forward to finally meeting all of these wonderful young people in person (most of them for the first time) and really putting them to work in April!
Creating a performance this way presents all sorts of unanticipated challenges, but we cut our group-video teeth on a project a few months earlier (my composition “Winter Wind”) and I’m delighted and grateful that many of my students were willing to do another. The performing arts are alive and well at Frank R Conwell Middle School #4!
