When “Simple” Becomes the Default — And What It Costs Us

We often treat simplicity as the ultimate goal.
Simple is better. Simple is easier. Simple is what we should aim for.
But what if simplicity, as we use it today, has quietly become shorthand for easy, convenient, and comfortable — rather than effective?
This video was filmed during a quiet work session at a coffee shop and became a space to reflect on how the idea of simplicity shows up not just in professional environments, but in families and relationships as well.
I explore different forms of simplicity:
• simplicity as an aesthetic
• simplicity as a principle
• and simplicity as a default expectation in both work and family systems
I share how I approach projects — and relationships — by asking:
• What is the goal?
• What is required to do this well?
• Are we optimizing for ease, or for long-term impact and value?
This reflection looks at how choosing the path of least resistance can:
• limit collaboration
• reduce opportunities for learning and growth
• and flatten the complexity that’s often required for trust, respect, and shared ownership — whether you’re working with colleagues, younger team members, or family.
This isn’t an argument against clarity or structure.
It’s an invitation to rethink what we mean by simple — and to consider whether the processes and patterns we default to are actually building effectiveness, connection, and long-term value.
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Where have you seen “simple” help — or hinder — growth in your work or family life?
