This started out as a simple cam swap job. I did the wooden dowel trick to keep the lifters up and removed the cam thinking I avoided removing both heads. Boy was I wrong. The cam came out with wear marks on two of the lobes indicating at least two of the lifters were bad. So I did what I knew I should have done in the first place. I removed both heads to gain access to the lifters. At this point I was pretty happy to see there was nothing inside the motor of great concern. There were two lifters with minimal wear which had to be replaced regardless. Either way, with some of the neglect I found with this junk yard motor, I expected worse. I took the opportunity to clean the heads and piston tops with some WD-40 and a scotch brite pad to freshen things up a bit.

If I was not in such a hurry to get the engine back in the car I would have done a full rebuild. But there is always room for that in the future. There is also room for a bigger motor and some turbos. Time will tell.

At a minimum, this video should serve as a good instructional video on how to remove and install cylinder heads and replace the lifters on your LS based motor. I hope this was a help.
