Footage Shows Deputy Shoot Armed Man at Vista Church

#UPDATE - Officials have released body-worn and surveillance camera footage of a deputy-involved shooting that occurred at a #Vista church on May 7th.
The incident occurred at the Iglesias Ni Cristo Church in the 1400 block of Calle Jules. At about 12:30 PM, deputies were dispatched to the church in reference to a man that was reportedly holding a handgun to his head. “Hi. Um, we have someone with a gun on the premises”, a 911 caller is heard saying on a recording also provided in the video. She proceeds to tell the dispatcher that the church patrons cannot exit the building safely.
After arriving, deputies were attempting to gather more information when the man exited the church with a gun in his right hand. They immediately began giving the male commands to drop the gun, but he ignored the commands and walked into the parking toward the deputies. The deputies backed up, continuing to give the male commands, but he continued ignoring them and advancing further into the parking lot. One deputy fired a single shot from his rifle, striking the male in the legs and causing him to drop the gun.
Deputies applied a tourniquet to each of the man’s legs before he was taken to a local hospital. His injuries were considered non-life-threatening. The suspect in the case is described as a 77-year-old Asian male, but his identity is being withheld for the time being.
The deputy involved in the shooting has been employed by the Sheriff’s Department for approximately three years. No deputies were injured. Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
