NATO peacekeeping troops flooded into Kosovo at daybreak on Saturday, just hours after a Russian armoured column entered the province's capital Pristina to a jubilant welcome by local Serbs.
Helicopters carrying members of Britain's elite Gurkha rifle regiment and paratroopers flew across the border at dawn, setting into motion Operation Joint Guardian, one of the biggest military undertakings in Europe since World War II.
Their first task was to take control of the border post of General Jankovic, on the road to Pristina. Serb soldiers had been seen leaving General Jankovic just a few hours before.
They wen to to secure the town of Kacanik on the way to Pristina.
The Gurkhas, who originate from Nepal, are renowned for their fierce fighting and the use of the Nepali fighting knife - the Kukri.
