This is the first part of ‘Basics of Raag Des’. Part I consists of ALL basics of the Raag – Aaroh, Avroh and the notation to the Sthaayi and Antara. Part II of the video includes the Sthaayi, Antara, Sthaayi ke alaap, Antare ke alaap and Sthaayi ke Taane.
Introduction to Raag Des –
Both, komal and shhudh nishaad are used. Komal Gandhaar is used as a Vivaadi swar.
Aaroh: Ni' Sa Re Ma Pa Ni Sa'
Avroh: Sa' Re' Ni* Dha Pa, Dha Ma Ga Re, Ga Ni' Sa
Key: '*' beside a note denotes a komal swar. ` beside a note denotes association with the lower octave.
*Vivaadi swar – A note that is not inherently present in the original structure of the raag, but is used in certain places for improved aesthetics.

Aradhana Karhade is a voice culture expert and music educator from Hyderabad, who aims to make music education accessible to all. Her YouTube series of tutorials is based on that very premise – making music lessons available to all. She holds a firm belief – age doesn’t matter if you really want to achieve something.
