14/09/24. This was when a locomotive last hauled a V/Line passenger service from Bairnsdale to Melbourne. That brought an end to decades of locomotive hauled passenger trains.
On that day N471 'City of Benalla' had the honor of hauling the last train.
Using footage filmed from the last 7 years, I have pieced together a video that shows the train's typical journey from Bairnsdale to Melbourne.
You will get to see some aspects of the train that the public usually doesn't get to see, such as the driver preparing the locomotive (at 5am in the morning!).
You will also see some examples of how things have changed over the years on the Bairnsdale line, such as the Avon River bridge and the Kilmany highway bridge.
This was one heck of a project to put together, and is a very thorough view of trains in this part of Victoria. This was also a special project for us as both Alex & I have grown up watching the N classes as a regular part of life in country Victoria.
So farewell to the N classes. Gone, but certainly not forgotten.
As usual, we both hope that you enjoy this video!
