To produce 1 ton of conventional #steel, 2 tons of carbon dioxide are emitted. The worldwide steel industry is thus responsible for 8% of the total carbon dioxide emissions.
How to cut those emissions and do a huge step towards a #climate friendly steel industry? Ayman El-Zoka and his colleagues at the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung (MPIE) are exploring ways to produce green steel – steel that does not cause any carbon dioxide emissions being produced. Ayman explains the challenges researchers face and their approach to use #hydrogen instead of carbon to produce steel.
