In 1961.
Equipped with a 390 Cu. In. V-8 producing 300 HP was the entry level power plant.
5 M-Code models were produced with a 390 Cu. In. V-8 producing 340 HP.
63,313 Thunderbirds were produced in 1963.
FUN FACT: The name “Thunderbird” that was chosen by Ford to represent In 1955 a small, two-door, convertible. It seems that Ford held a contest, in-house, asking for a name for this new creation. An employee, Alden Gibberson from the “Styling” department won the contest with the name “Thunderbird”. Alden thought the car represented “Power” & “Strength”. The winner won a “New Suit” from “Saks Fifth Avenue”.
