Such a smooth bassgroove to play! And which bassplayer doesn’t recognize the bassolo!! The ‘secret’ of the groove in this song is playing the groove with ease; playing some notes with accent (staccato/short); playing quarter triplets (especially in the bassolo) and playing a different groove in the Verse and Chorus although the chords are the same. It’s that subtle difference that really makes the difference. Listen for instance at bar 65 where the G note (chord) is played on the second eight of the fourth count and not on the first note of the next bar.
There are different versions of this published (on records and on the internet). This version is called the 'jazz' version. The original band played this song this way at live performances. You can also listen to this version on    • Smooth Operator  (1984) Jazz Version   It does not really different a lot if you listen to other versions. This version has got some more bars :-)
