1984-85 was a tumultuous period for the Hatters!
The previous season had seen the emergence of a plan to relocate the Club to Milton Keynes (honestly – it’s true!).
Supporters soon formed a campaign group to strongly oppose the move, holding meetings and marches across the town. Fans also boycotted games at Kenilworth Road.
Eventually, Chairman Denis Mortimer resigned, the absurd relocation plans were scrapped and a new Chairman, David Evans, was appointed.
On the 1984-85 playing side, Paul Walsh was sold to Liverpool for, a then huge, £750,000. Brian Horton, Raddy Antic and Kirk Stephens had also moved-on. Andy Dibble, Ashley Grimes and Vince Hilaire all joined the Club at the start of the season.
Mick Harford, Steve Foster, David Preece and Peter Nicholas came in during the middle months of the campaign. Suddenly the team had acquired a new spine and league results improved.
Luton started the game in 18th position, finishing the season in 13th (of 22 teams) with 54 points. Arsenal finished in 7th place with 66 points.
