The 3 main ways to charge for specialty mowing are: by the hour, bid the job, and by the acre. But which method is best? They each have pros and cons to consider.
If you opt to charge by the hour you can sometimes get a away without going out to look at the job before hand. You basically just show and work as efficiently as possible, with every minute counting. To do this, you need to have figured out your target rate to know how much to charge for one hour. You don't want to be wasting time because the customer will see this and will not be happy. If the customer asks how long you think it will take to mow the area, becareful answering and try to give yourself a little cushion.
If you opt to bid the job you need to go out and look it over. Figure out the size of the area, what the terrain is like, and what class you would consider the brush to be. Here is a link to another video that can be helpful when measuring: • Measure areas without even walking
Using your target rate, you can then calculate how long it will take and what it will cost. It is a good idea to give yourself a little cushion for unseen obstacles that you may encounter. Customers usually like this option since they know upfront what the project is going to cost.
If you opt to charge by the acre, you need to know what it costs you to mow an acre. We all know that every acre is not created equal so this might vary. With specialty mowing, most areas are thick and it can be hard to see everything clearly so be sure to give yourself a little cushion with your target hourly rate.
