Oncidium Orchid Care Guide

Oncidium orchids, also known as “dancing lady orchids,” are relatively easy to care for and can thrive indoors with the right conditions. Here’s a care guide to keep them healthy and blooming.

1. Light

Ideal light: Oncidiums prefer bright, indirect light. A location near an east or west-facing window is ideal.

Signs of proper light: Leaves should be a light yellow-green. Dark green leaves may mean they aren’t getting enough light.

2. Temperature

Daytime: 70-85 F (21-29C)
Nighttime: 55-60 F (13-16C)

3. Humidity

Oncidiums prefer a humidity level between 40-60%

If your home is dry, consider using a humidity tray or a room humidifier. Mist the leaves occasionally, especially in winter when indoor air can be dry.

4. Watering

Frequency: Water every 7-10 days during active growth (Spring to Fall). Reduce watering to every 10-14 days in the winter.

Method: Water thoroughly, allowing water to drain out of the pot to avoid soggy roots. Never let the pot sit in water, as this can lead to root rot.

Check Roots: Healthy roots are firm and white or green. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot.

5. Potting and Medium

Medium: Use a well-draining orchid mix, usually made of bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss.

Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or if the medium starts to break down. Repot in Spring when new growth appears.

6. Fertilizing

Use a balanced orchid fertilizing, diluted to half strength.

Fertilize every two weeks during active growth.

7. Air Circulation

Oncidiums appreciate good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. A small fan can be helpful in enclosed spaces.

8. Blooming and Dormancy

Oncidiums typically bloom once a year, usually in Fall or Winter.

After blooming, cut the flower spike off at the base, and let the plant rest with slightly reduced watering and feeding.
