Hiking Goatfell on the Isle of Arran, the island's highest point and most challenging summit. I followed the National Trust for Scotland trail starting at Brodick Castle & ascended to 874 metres.

I parked up close to the grounds of Brodick Castle and found the trailhead quite easily passing an old pink house and heading into the wilderness. The hike takes between 4.5 and 6 hours for a round trip and involves an ascent of 874 metres (2,287 feet) walking a distance of approximately 3 miles each way. It is classified as a Corbett and operated and maintained by the National Trust for Scotland.

The first section of the hike is through trees and forestry where the path is even and waterfalls can be seen in the distance. As I made it above the treeline the landscape became much more desolate and rocky, part of the route involves walking across flat boulders and the further I got the steeper it became.

The pathway brought me up to the east ridge of the mountain and then things got much steeper - the final section involves climbing up rocks that are cut out like steps as the summit hung over me. It was tough but not dangerous as long as I took care of my footsteps and stayed away from exposed edges. On this particular day the massive rock face I was headed up sheltered me from the worst of the wind although I did get battered a couple of times by passing showers.

When I arrived at the summit visibility was rather average, it was super windy and so the cloud cover came and went - often without notice and within a couple of seconds. I got some spectacular views of the nearby peaks and valleys but distant mountains and the western side of the island remained mostly hidden by the weather.

Hiking Goatfell was a worthwhile experience and for the most part the weather was decent - I would definitely recommend it to anybody able to complete a challenging hike and who is prepared for a steep final section.
