Pope Leo III didn’t just crown Charlemagne—he barely survived to do it.
When Leo became pope in 795, the Roman aristocracy loathed him. He wasn’t from the traditional Roman nobility and was seen as a Frankish puppet. In 799, his enemies ambushed him during a procession, tried to gouge out his eyes and cut out his tongue—likely to render him unfit for office.
Miraculously, he survived and fled to Charlemagne’s court in Paderborn, begging for protection.
Charlemagne backed him. In a bold move, Leo returned to Rome under Frankish guard and, instead of being tried, held a public oath swearing his innocence—an unusual reversal of roles.
A year later, on Christmas Day 800, Leo crowned Charlemagne emperor, reinforcing his own power and asserting papal supremacy.
Cunning or desperate? Either way, Leo reshaped medieval Europe.
