This school district has been using propane school buses for more than 35 years. In fact, the district was the first to use propane buses in the city of San Antonio, Texas. Nowadays, the district runs 440 buses on clean, American propane — around half of their total fleet. Refueling is done with five stations, each with a roughly 18,000-gallon, on-site tank of propane. In terms of overall costs of maintenance, Ric Escobar, Station Manager reports that propane buses are less expensive. His mechanics are also more comfortable working with the propane buses than diesel. The noticeably quieter operation of propane buses has made a positive impact for drivers and students. With the reduced bus noise, it’s easier for drivers to pay attention to the road and their many passengers. Superintendent Dr. Brian Woods says the community has banded around the district using fuel that generates fewer emissions and won’t aggravate health issues like asthma. Aside from cutting harmful emissions, the propane buses save the district $1.3 million in fuel savings every year. In the long term, Northside’s goal is to have a nearly all-propane school bus fleet to continue cutting their emissions and saving more money.
