Japans best backcountry destination - Hakuba has to be right up there at the top.

Hakuba is arguably Japans best backcountry destination and is absolutely world class when it comes to big mountain freeriding. All the top name skiers and boarders are constantly making the pilgrimage out here to film their latest blockbuster movie scenes with the steep and deep lines and huge mountain backdrops on offer. The World Freeride Tour is also held here each year. If you like getting out of resort then I can certainly recommend Hakuba as a must visit snow mecca. If you are new to the game then get yourself educated before walking out the gates. A great start is to get on to kbyg.org and check out their online courses. Next is to book an onsnow course. Try Evergreen in Hakuba who run a number of them throughout the winter. AST1 & AST2 are available. Another good way to introduce the backcountry here is through a guide. Once again Evergreen as well as Northern Heights Guiding are good options.

Just a note. The backcountry here is seriously dengerous and people die in avalanches every year. There are also glide cracks, thermal holes, waterfalls, cliffs and every other danger out there to be aware of. Take it serious folks and Know Before You Go.

This weeks drink of choice was Greygoose vodka and soda with a sudachi citrus. A great drink if you are counting calories. I'm not. I just enjoy it :)
