KYDIANTA VILLAGE - INFO:
The deserted village of Kidiada is in the centre of a triangle formed by the three villages, Lagada, Sikiada and Pitios. The village was created by the residents of Kila, after the destruction of Kila by pirates.
Kidiada is built amongst mountainsides and it was indistinguishable to the eyes of pirates. In the Medieval era, the village is said to have been the biggest one in the area.
When Greece revolted against the Turks (1822), Kidianta was one of the few villages which participated in the revolution and was totally destroyed by the Turks in retaliation for its residents’ participation.
The Massive Earthquake of 1881, was the reason for the creation of the village of Sikiada, built by a large number of residents of Kidianta. In the end of the 19th century, the people involved with the sea, started building their houses in “kolokythia” bay. That was the beginning of the creation of Lagada village.
Kidianta’s residents had been the navigation pioneers on Chios island. They were all free, restless minds and made the village the basis of the National resistance in Chios.
After Greece’s liberation from the Germans, the damages of the earthquake in 1949 and the isolation of the area, were the main reasons for the depopulation of the village. The village’s school worked for the last time in 1948.
Meanwhile the persecutions of a large number of residents, when they joined the grassroots movement to restore the power to the people, also played a part in the depopulation of Kidianta.
Nowadays the only buildings resisting the natural decay are the churches of Ayios Ioanis and Ayia Anastasia.
Twice every year Kidianta comes to life during two special ceremonies. The first one is dedicated to the heroic struggle of EPON.
The second one is organized by the descendants of the residents of the village on Good Friday. They come as pilgrims to honour the memory of their deserted homeland.
Kidianta along with Lagada were set up as local administrative areas in 1834.
