Leela Chitnis was born on 1909, she was one of Bollywood's pioneering actresses who broke barriers as the first educated woman in Indian cinema with a B.A. degree. From her theatre roots in progressive plays to starring in iconic films like Kangan (1939), Awaara (1951), and Guide (1965), she evolved from romantic leads opposite Ashok Kumar to the quintessential suffering mother figure that defined Hindi cinema for decades. Widowed young, she raised four sons while revolutionizing roles for women on screen and even became India's first Lux soap endorser! Ashok Kumar himself credited her with teaching him how to convey emotions through his eyes. In 1941, at the height of her popularity, she became the first Indian film star to endorse an international brand. She died at the age of 93.
