4 Strange American Cars From the 70s!

Four of the strangest American cars from the 70s—each with a crazy story, odd design, or wild idea behind it.

First up is the Bradley GT II, a sleek kit car with gullwing doors and pop-up headlights. It looked like a futuristic sports car but was actually built on the frame of a Volkswagen Beetle. Made by a small company in Minnesota, it promised big dreams but ran into trouble after only a few years. Some famous people even owned one, but the company eventually went bankrupt.

Next is the Manta Mirage, a fiberglass rocket that looked like it came straight off a race track. Built in California by two brothers, it used a powerful V8 engine and weighed less than a Honda Civic. It had race car looks and serious speed—but wasn’t very comfortable. Still, it became a favorite among DIY car builders and even showed up in a Hollywood movie.

Then we look at the Sebring-Vanguard CitiCar, one of the first electric cars made in America. It looked like a giant wedge-shaped golf cart, and it didn’t go very fast. But it was way ahead of its time. Designed during the gas crisis, it ran on lead-acid batteries and could travel up to 40 miles on a single charge. It may have looked silly, but it helped start the electric car movement.

Finally, we have the Checker Aerobus, one of the longest cars ever made. Built to carry up to 15 people, this stretched-out taxi looked like something from a cartoon. It wasn’t fast or fancy, but it was great at moving big groups of people around airports or cities. It even had versions made for prisoners and ambulances!
