Once chemical agents were detected by either smell or by other means, almost anything that made a loud noise was utilized to alert the troops. This included: horns, rattles, whistles signal horns, bells, color rockets, torches, sirens, signal lights, and even parachute whistles fired into the air. Some of these alarms, however, created problems of their own. The rattles often sounded like machine gun fire. It was also difficult to distinguish between other non-chemical alarms or loud sounds.
