Did Toyota really eliminate the Team Leader role when they introduced Autonomous Teams?
No, of course not.
If anything, they strengthened it—just in a different way.
In Lean organisations, Team Leaders don’t just hold the team together… they raise it up. They’re the bridge between long-term improvements and daily performance, between operators and support staff, between doing and thinking.
But we often get this role completely wrong.
Too operational, or too much focus on registrations, or no time left to actually lead.
So let’s walk through what a Team Leader should be doing and how to get there—especially if you’re not Toyota 😉
