Scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the Centre for Whale Research (CWR) are in Perth Canyon, Western Australia to satellite tag the elusive pygmy blue whale. The satellite data will help us understand the whale's northern migration through the offshore waters of Western Australian to their breeding areas in Indonesia. This migratory route overlaps with industrial activities, which may be negatively impacting them and the feedings areas, which are important for their recovery.
AIMS and CWR have been tagging pygmy blue whales for several years and continue to build-up knowledge on the threatened cetacean in the Western Australian region and beyond. The scientific data will help governments and industry reduce potential threats and support the conservation and eventual recovery of the pygmy blue whale.
