Andrej Porovic of PES Technologies explains how understanding microbial biomass could change the way we measure carbon sequestration in soil.
Microbes drive the soil carbon cycle — taking in CO₂, using it for biological activity, and then releasing it back into the atmosphere. But it’s the dead microbial matter that forms long-term, stable carbon in the soil.
If we can measure microbial biomass at the start and end of a season, we can begin to quantify how much carbon is truly being stored underground — and how regenerative practices impact that balance.
