You don't have to be M.C. Escher to make your own tessellation pattern. This mini workflow helps you quickly understand how to build your own pattern with an easy-to-use script. You can use the script to interactively test new patterns. Set an origin point and two offsets (U and V) and fill all kinds of shapes with your new repeat pattern.
