The enzymes hexokinase and glucokinase are the first enzyme of glycolysis that plays an important role in the phosphorylation of glucose to form glucose 6 phosphate. They function by the mechanism of induced fit model where binding of substrate with the enzyme causes change in the conformation of enzyme. This change in conformation causes the two domains of enzyme to come closer to one another allowing substrates to react. Both hexokinase and glucokinase differs significantly in their Km value. The hexokinase has low Km value while glucokinase has high Km value, making kinetic properties of both enzymes different from one another.
