NSW Trainlink Endeavour And Hunter Railcars On The Hunter Line.

This is a video exploring the Endeavour and Hunter railcars that operate on the Hunter Line in the Hunter Valley Region of New South Wales.

The Hunter region is located 162 km North of Sydney NSW and is home to about 682,000 people. It is a major industrial and mining region with one of the worlds largest coal export ports at its heart in Newcastle. It also has a growing tourism and wine industry.

The Hunter Line operates intercity passenger trains along part of the Main North line and part of the NSW North Coast line. The passenger trains commence from Newcastle Interchange and run to Maitland with some trains continuing on to Scone on the Main North line and the rest of the trains continuing on to either Telarah or Dungog on the NSW North Coast line.

The passenger services operate frequently between Newcastle and Telarah Via Maitland with trains every 30 minutes on weekdays and every 60 minutes on weekends. There are additional trains during weekday peak periods.

However the trains from Maitland to Scone and Dungog only operate 3 to 5 times a day. The outer sections of the Hunter line has a more regional train service level compared with the more suburban train frequency from Maitland to Newcastle Interchange. This results in a railway with two very different characteristics.

The trains that operate on the Hunter line use two car diesel railcars either the Hunter railcar or Endeavour rail car. Occasionally 2 railcars are coupled together to form a 4 car train during peak times.

The Hunter railcars were built between 2006 and 2007 by UGL Rail in Newcastle with a total of 7 two car units built. They are powered by two Cummins QSK19-R diesel engines with a separate Cummins 6ISBe-G1 diesel engine to power the air conditioning and lighting. The Hunter railcars have a top speed of 160kph but are limited to 145kph in regular service. They were built to replace the former 620/720 railcars that dated from 1960s.

The Endeavour railcars were built between 1994 and 1996 by ABB Dandenong with a total of 30 two car units built. They are powered by two Cummins KTA-19R diesel engines with a separate Cummins LT10R(G) diesel engine to power the air conditioning and lighting. The Endeavour railcars have a top speed of 160kph but are limited to 145kph in regular service. The Endeavour railcars also share a common design with the NSW Trainlink Xplorer railcars.
