Korlai Fort Alibaug #alibaug #forts
The fort of Korlai is built on a steep hill. The main road and this hill are connected by a narrow causeway. Evidence of Portuguese trade can be seen in the distinct Luso-Indian Portuguese Creole spoken by the inhabitants of Koralai villages.
In 1521, the Nizamshah of Ahmednagar allowed Diogu Lopish di Sequeira, a Korlai officer, to build a fort in the Portuguese village of Chaul. The Portuguese started operations in Chaul on the other side of the creek near Revdanda. They made their first strong push on the north coast of Korlai. Jemeli Carreri in his book Churchill IV mentions that Nizam-ul-Mulk allowed the Portuguese to build the fort of Chaul in exchange for the supply of 300 Persian or Arabian horses at a reasonable price.
In 1739, Chimajiappa sent Subhanrao Mankara to Korlai, and the fort was captured within a year.
After this his custody was given to Angre. Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre started a gun casting factory there. The Marathas changed the names of the towers and changed the name of San Diego to Pusti Buruj and San Francisco to Ganesh Buruj.
In 1818, the fort came under the control of the British.
