Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See) is one of the largest lakes in South Tyrol and, together with Lake Klopein, is considered the warmest bathing lake in the Alps. The lake lends its name to the local wine made from the Vernatsch (Schiava) grape grown in the surrounding vineyards.
The village of St. Josef (San Giuseppe) lies directly on the lakeshore, while Kaltern (Caldaro) itself is situated further north along the South Tyrolean Wine Road (Strada del Vino dell’Alto Adige).
Overlooking the lake stands Leuchtenburg (Castelchiaro), the ruins of a 13th-century hilltop castle.
