On September 13, 2023, at approximately 4:08 p.m., CA State Parks Dispatch received
a 911 transfer call in reference to a vessel accident/ distress call at Lake
Perris in the boating open zone of the lake just north of Alessandro Island.
Three State Park Peace Officers and Lifeguard staff responded to the scene.
On scene, the reporting party stated that one male occupant of the vessel was
on an inflatable behind their boat and fell off. The person was not able to swim
back, at that time a male passenger on the vessel jumped in the water to attempt
to rescue the person in distress and he also began to struggle. Both men went
under the water under distress and did not surface. Neither were wearing life
jackets.
Lifeguards began to search the water and the Riverside County Sheriff's Dive was
called in to assist with the search. The rescue operation was suspended at
approximately 10:00 PM due to conditions and resources. The following day, on
September 14, 2023, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Dive Team resumed
the search for the two missing men. Approximately (4) CA State Parks personnel
and (10) Riverside County Sheriff personnel were on scene.
Shortly after 1:00 PM, Riverside County Sheriff's Department recovered one of the
two missing men. At approximately 4:00 PM, Riverside County Sheriff's Department
recovered the second missing person from the lake. Riverside County Coroner is
tasked with identification, next of kin notifications, and cause of death.
California State Parks investigation into this matter is ongoing and will be
working with Riverside County Coroner's office to complete it.
Both men were later identified by a family member as Patrick Howard, 53, and Bob Mauro, 58, both from the South Bay area.
