The Stone Church - Community of Christ - Independence, Missouri.
The following information comes from a brochure I received at the church..
A BRIEF HISTORY
"The site of the Stone Church lies adjacent to a 63 acre tract of land consecrated and dedicated in August, 1831 as part of the "land of Zion and the spot of the Temple." Joseph Smith Jr., the Prophet-martyr of the newly organized church was in attendance at this dedication.
On April 6, 1888, the cornerstone was laid for this Stone Church. Assisting in the event was Joseph Smith III, oldest son of the founder, who was called to the presidency of the Reorganization and accepted at the General Conference of 1860 in Amboy, Illinois.
When the basement was completed in 1889, the congregation from the old Brick Church moved in. Rounded-backed kitchen chairs were used by the congregation, an improvement over the uncomfortable benches made of half logs on which they had previously sat.
In 1892, the superstructure was completed with slate roof and stained glass windows. The towers were to support a steeple and bells, Fourteen years later the present pews were installed. With the advent of electricity the gas chandeliers were removed and electric lights were installed.
The Stone Church was ready for occupancy in 1892, and on April 6, of that year the first General Conference (40th of the church) convened in the upper auditorium.
The entire church membership at that time in Independence was nearly 600. The Carillonic bells were placed in 1954; the Education Building was completed in 1956 and the administrative foyer in 1964."
