廣西村莊，二十八歲的農婦李巧魚和丈夫何滿有個女兒丫丫。三十八歲的成永貴、梁雲珍夫婦有個獨子壯壯。一日放學後，壯壯乘坐何滿的三輪車發生車禍死亡，法院判決何滿家賠償12萬元。梁雲珍已經不能再生育；何家則因支付賠償金而傾家蕩產，無力再負擔何滿車禍腿傷的昂貴手術費，李巧魚只能咬緊牙關，一肩扛起家計。這天，成永貴買醉歸來，闖入李巧魚住處告訴她，自己需要的不是賠償，而是一個兒子的再生。更深的錯誤在夜色中鑄成，將兩個本來平靜的家庭送上不歸路……。

In a small village, two couples live as peaceful neighbors: Qiaoyu and her husband Heman with their daughter Yaya, and Yonggui and his wife with their son Zhuang. One day, Zhuang is killed by a car accident when riding Heman’s pedicab. The accident brings disaster to both families. One loses their only child; the other can’t afford to pay for the big compensation. One night, Yonggui, drunk and angry, darkens the doorway of Qiaoyu’s home, informing her that she owes his family a life. No monetary compensation can bring Zhuang back, only another child will do…
