Prayer and Procession is one of the most contemplative and evocative pieces from the collaboration between the mystic-philosopher G. I. Gurdjieff and the composer-pianist Thomas de Hartmann. Written during their creative partnership in the 1920s, the work belongs to the collection often referred to as the Gurdjieff/De Hartmann music, a body of compositions inspired by Gurdjieff’s travels through the Caucasus, the Middle East, and Central Asia.
The piece combines the introspective depth of sacred Eastern chant with Hartmann’s refined Western classical technique. Prayer and Procession unfolds slowly, with a solemn, almost ritualistic pacing. Its melodic lines are simple yet deeply expressive, mirroring the inward attention characteristic of Gurdjieff’s spiritual teaching. The “prayer” evokes a meditative stillness, while the “procession” suggests movement—symbolically pointing to an inner journey rather than an outward ritual.
Often performed on piano or arranged for strings and other instruments, the work is cherished for its ability to create a space of silence and presence. It exemplifies the essence of Gurdjieff’s musical vision: music not for entertainment, but for awakening sensation, attention, and inner harmony.
