In this two-part series, we’re taking on the challenge of building the Monster of Monster Gravel Bikes using a Marino hardtail frame and a mix of components from around the shop. In Part 1, we dive into the setup, discussing geometry, handling, and the unique considerations when converting a hardtail mountain bike frame into a gravel powerhouse.
We’ll also talk about some key components like:

WTB ST30 Rims with DT Swiss 240 Hubs
L-TWOO 12-Speed Shifters (and why they didn’t work out…)
Despite the challenges with the shifter system, we made significant progress on this monster gravel build. Stay tuned for Part 2 in January, where we’ll address the shifter issue with a Shimano GRX upgrade, finalize the build, and take this beast out for its first ride!
