Snail evolution: how did snails evolve from living in water to living on land? Tim Pearce, Curator of Mollusks, answers your question on Ask a Scientist!
Host Jessica Romano joins Tim Pearce at the museum to ask, “what does the fossil record tell us about the evolution of snails from living in water to living on land?”
Tim answers with interesting tidbits like: Land snails appear in the fossil record then disappear from it for millions of years! But why?
Tim and Jess then discuss the adaptations snails would need to make for living on land vs. in water. Osmosis and snail kidney function provide researchers with clues as to how they adapted.
Finally, Tim shows off shells from Southeast Asia, Pennsylvania, and Cuba from the Carnegie Museum of Natural History Collection.
