Bison herd forms from both sides of trail trapping me in the middle at Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park in Micanopy, Florida. Fortunately, the bison that were milling around the observation tower moved just enough out of the way for me to climb it and make my escape - what a relief! State and national parks advise that visitors stay at least 75 feet away from bison and other wildlife. I would've been only a few feet away from them if they passed me on the trail! Bison are calmest in large herds. Typically herds consist of females and their calves, while males live alone or in bachelor groups. In 1975 ten bison from a wildlife refuge in Oklahoma were introduced to Paynes Prairie to return the land to what it was before colonial settlement. Since then the herd has grown to at least 50. Before 2012 male bison also roamed the preserve, but concerns of human interaction, injuries, escapes, and liability were increasing with the growing herd. The decision to relocate male bison was highly controversial, but nonetheless cowboys rounded up the male bison and sent them to farms in Florida, Texas, and North Carolina for the purpose of introducing new bloodlines into existing herds.
