The Social War is often called an "unnecessary" war, but the Italian allies who rose in revolt against the Roman republic certainly felt it was necessary - this documentary looks at how Roman political dysfunction and the assassination of a reformist tribune made revolt inevitable and significantly weakened the Republic.
The conflict is unfortunately often overlooked in traditional historical narratives but this video offers an analysis of the underlying economic, political and social tensions that fueled the rebellion. ultimately the war was a struggle for rights and political representation but it had long-term consequences on Roman society and politics.
