Rain, the B-side to The Beatles' 1966 hit "Paperback Writer," was just as highly regarded as its A-side counterpart—a testament to the band's consistent excellence. This track has become one of my most requested remixes. After many months of work, and with YouTube publication restrictions now lifted, I am excited to share a remix that I am truly satisfied with. My inspiration was provided by this question: How would 'Rain' sound if it had been recorded and mixed during the 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' sessions with the abundance of stereo panning creativity? It was an interesting thought and now an interesting, fresh new listen.
This remix draws from multiple sources to recreate the spirit and experimentation of 1967.
The lead and backing vocals are sourced from the 2022 Atmos mix.
The guitars also come from the 2022 Atmos mix.
The bass and drums are from the 1966 stereo version, originally released on "Past Masters."
The ending lead vocal is a blend of the Atmos version and the "Past Masters" version.
The ending backing vocals are taken from the "Past Masters" version.
For those interested in the technical changes, here’s an overview:
ADT Removal: John’s lead vocal no longer features Artificial Double Tracking (ADT), which was subtly applied in both the 1966 and 2022 mixes.
Stereo Backing Vocals: The three backing harmony vocals have been separated and are now positioned in a stereo spread behind the lead vocal, with creative left and right panning applied to John and Paul’s harmonies. During the fade-out, the backing vocals pan from left to right and back again, adding dimensionality—a mixing technique popular during this era.
Tribute to “Tomorrow Never Knows”: In the moment where John sings “Can you hear me?” I’ve included a subtle nod to a vocal process used in "Tomorrow Never Knows" from the same 1966 "Revolver" sessions.
Guitar Spread: The guitars are now spread across the stereo stage, highlighting the edges and creating space in the center for the drums and bass. Unlike the 1966 and 2022 mixes, the drums are now centered, and the floor tom has been shifted to the left.
Enhanced Rhythm Section: The drums and bass have been slightly boosted, creating more synergy as they now occupy the same central space.
Nothing was added that was not part of the original. This remix is strictly a de-mixing of the original instruments and vocals and a remixing of those elements.
Thank you so much for listening. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!
