John wrote Cry Baby Cry in India, though the idea emerged in late 1967 during the I Am The Walrus sessions, from a television commercial, similar to Good Morning Good Morning, as Hunter Davies recalls John saying :

"I've got another one here, a few words, I think I got them from an advert: 'Cry baby cry, make your mother buy.' I've been playing it over on the piano. I've let it go now. It'll come back if I really want it."

John later completed the song in India, referencing the nursery rhyme Sing A Song Of Sixpence. John was always dismissive of the song in later years, calling it a piece of rubbish and refusing to claim authorship although McCartney didn't help with the writing at all (apart from the obvious coda taken from a jam called Can You Take Me Back)

The band started work on the song on July 15th. The four Beatles rehearsed the track extensively, taping about 30 attempts with John on organ, Paul on bass, George on guitar and Ringo on drums. Those rehearsals were believed to be deleted to make room for more tape until 2018, where 18 minutes of the rehearsals were discovered. An incomplete rehearsal was released on the 2018 anniversary boxset for the album (   • Cry Baby Cry (Unnumbered Rehearsal)  ).

The following day, the band continued work on the song, with John switching to acoustic guitar. Take one of these sessions was released on Anthology 3 (   • Cry Baby Cry (Take 1)  ). Take 10 was chosen as the backing track.

The July 16th session marked Geoff Emerick's last session as a Beatles engineer until his return on The Ballad Of John And Yoko :

"I lost interest in the White Album because they were really arguing among themselves and swearing at each other. The expletives were really flying… I said to George, ‘Look, I’ve had enough. I want to leave. I don’t want to know any more.’ George said, ‘Well, leave at the end of the week’ – I think it was a Monday or Tuesday – but I said, ‘No, I want to leave now, this very minute.’ And that was it."

Session tapes mention an organ part by George on the same take 10 used for a backing track, but it was eventually wiped and George's contributions were reduced to two guitar overdubs. The band also overdubbed two piano tracks (one by John, one by Paul), backing vocals by John and Paul, some percussion and a harmonium track played by George Martin. John and Paul also recorded a short whistling track, often mistaken for a organ part (15:28).

On October 17th, during the band's longest session (which started the day before and lasted a full 24 hours), John and Paul figured that Cry Baby Cry wouldn't be a good segue into Revolution 9, so it was decided to add a portion of the ominous Can You Take Me Back at the end of the track.
