Unveiling the Palazzo San Clemente Plaque in Florence, May 2022

On May 27th 2022, the 1745 Association's Plaque at the Palazzo San Clemente in Florence, home of Prince Charles Edward Stuart between 1776 and 1785, was officially unveiled in the presence of representatives of the Mayor of Florence and the University of Florence.

The University are the current owners of the Palace, which now serves as the Library of the Department of Urban and Spatial Planning and Cartographic Documentation Centre. It is located at Via Pier Antonio Micheli, 2, 50121 Firenze.

Dottoressa Simonetta Pagnini, director of the Library of Architecture of the University,
Assessore Alessandro Martini, representative of the Mayor of the town of Florence, arrayed in a sash in the colours of Italy.

The story behind the plaque:
After wandering the continent for many years, Prince Charles Edward Stuart finally settled in this Palace, where he lived under the alias of the Count of Albany. The Prince purchased the Palace from the Guadagni family in 1777. It was later sold by his daughter Charlotte to the Dukes of San Clemente after the Prince left. In declining health, his hopes and ambitions long since gone, the Prince initially lived there with his wife, Princess Louise of Stolberg-Gederntwenty, whom he had married in 1772. Reconciled with his brother Henry and his daughter Charlotte, he found moments of happiness in his Florentine home during his later years. Within the Palace's atrium can be seen the Stuart coat of arms.
